If you’re having trouble streaming while connected to Proton VPN, these fixes should solve most issues.

Streaming is available with VPN Plus, Proton Unlimited, and all other paid Proton VPN plans. If you’re on Proton Free, you’ll need to upgrade for streaming coverage.

To find out which streaming services are compatible with Proton VPN, visit our streaming setup guide.

1. Connect to a different server

Look for a server in a nearby country with a low server load.

2. Clear your cache and cookies

3. Use private browsing or incognito mode

If you’re streaming from your browser, use a private or incognito window. This bypasses cached data and disables most extensions.

4. Restart your device and the Proton VPN app

Disconnect from Proton VPN and restart your device. Once it restarts, reconnect to VPN before streaming.

5. Update your apps

Make sure you’re on the latest version of Proton VPN. You should also update your streaming service and browser app if needed.

6. Check your streaming service subscription

  • Make sure you have an active subscription to your streaming service. Streaming service subscriptions aren’t included in a VPN plan.
  • You might also want to check that the show you want to watch is available in the region you’re connected to.

7. Sign in to your streaming service before connecting to the VPN

Some streaming services work better if you sign in before connecting to VPN.

8. Disable proxies, ad blockers, and extensions

They can sometimes cause streaming issues. If you have any of the following enabled, try turning them off:

  • Proxy extensions
  • Ad blockers (including Proton VPN’s NetShield)
  • Video downloader extensions

Refresh your browser afterward.

9. Change your VPN protocol

(If you’re using a Russian streaming service like Ivi or Kinopoisk, use Stealth or WireGuard® TCP)

10. Check for IP and DNS leaks

This ensures your streaming service can’t see your real IP address or DNS information.

  1. Connect to a Plus server.
  2. Go to protonvpn.com/what-is-my-ip-address to check your IP address, or ipleak.net(yeni pencere) to check your IP address, WebRTC, and DNS.
  3. Make sure the IP address shown matches the Proton VPN IP displayed in the app.
  4. If there’s a mismatch or leak, disable DNS over HTTPS.
    • If you’re using antivirus software like Avast Real Site or Comodo Secure DNS, make sure it isn’t overriding your DNS.

11. Turn off Location Services (iOS)

Location Services can interfere with streaming on iPhone or iPad. You can disable them in your device settings.

12. Set your device timezone to match your VPN location

Some streaming services (like Channel 4 in the UK) won’t work if your device isn’t in the same timezone as your VPN location.

Change your device time to match the country you’re connected to.

13. Netflix catalog delay in Germany, France, Italy, and Switzerland

When you connect to servers in Germany, France, Italy, or Switzerland, you may not see the local Netflix catalog right away. This is due to European data portability laws.

The catalog should update after a few weeks of using Proton VPN to access Netflix in that country.
