How to set up your AsusWRT router for Proton VPN using WireGuard®

Connect your AsusWRT RT-AXxxx router to Proton VPN(new window) using the WireGuard® VPN protocol, so any device on your network can use the VPN connection.
AsusWRT RT-ACxxx routers and some AsusWRT RT-AXxxx models don’t support WireGuard. If your router doesn’t support WireGuard, you can configure it using OpenVPN.

- Download the WireGuard configuration file(s), selecting Router for the platform.

- Open your browser and enter the router’s IP address in the address bar. By default, this is 192.168.50.1.

If you can’t access the router settings, turn off the VPN and try again.
- Select VPN from the sidebar. Select the VPN Fusion tab, then click Add profile.

- Fill in the following details:
- Connection Name: This can be anything you wish (for example, Proton VPN).
- VPN type: WireGuard
Leave all other fields blank.
- Click Import config file, then select the WireGuard configuration file you downloaded in step 1.

- Once the upload is complete, the remaining fields will autofill, and you’ll get a Complete notification.
- If you’re on a newer version of Asus RT-AXxxx, you’ll see an Apply to all devices toggle. Enable the toggle.
- Click Apply and Enable to complete the setup.

Manage your WireGuard connection
After you click Apply and Enable during setup, your router will automatically connect to Proton VPN. To confirm it’s working correctly, visit our free secure IP scanner and check your IP address location matches your VPN location.

- To disconnect from VPN: Go to Advanced settings → VPN → VPN Fusion and toggle the connection switch On.
- To reconnect to VPN: Go to Advanced settings → VPN → VPN Fusion and toggle the connection switch On.
