How to unblock Youku with Proton VPN

Youku(new window) is one of China’s largest video streaming platforms, owned by Alibaba Group. It offers Chinese dramas, many with English and multilingual subtitles or dubbing, along with movies, TV shows, short dramas, anime, variety shows, live streaming, and VR content in some regions.

Youku is free to use but includes ads. A paid VIP membership removes ads, unlocks HD, and gives early access to some shows. You can watch on PC, TV, or mobile. Some basic, free content is viewable on the web without an account, but signing in is required for most features, personalized settings, and higher-quality playback on the mobile app.

Youku isn’t the only platform you can stream with Proton VPN, though. You can also access other China-based services like Tencent Video, Mango TV, and Bilibili, plus international ones like Disney+, Max, Netflix, and Amazon Prime Video. To access Youku:

Connect to any of our servers in China.

On our Android TV app and Apple TV app, selecting any country will automatically connect you to a Plus server in that country if you have the right subscription.

Plus servers are available for Proton VPN Plus, Unlimited, Visionary or any of the family plans (Duo, Family).

Step 1:

Get a VPN subscription

If you already have a VPN Plus, Proton Unlimited(new window), Duo, Family, or Visionary (legacy users only) account, you can skip to step 2.

If you’re a new user, sign up for Proton VPN.

If you already have a Free plan, upgrade your account by signing in and selecting the desired plan from your account Subscription page.

Step 2:

Install our VPN app
You need to download the Proton VPN app for your operating system. You can securely stream your favorite shows on Windows, macOS, Linux devices, Android TV, Apple TV, or on the go with your Android or iOS devices.

Connect to a Plus server in China, open your Youku app or website(new window), then kick back and relax.

If you experience issues watching Youku, please try the following:

Restart Proton VPN application and VPN connection
Clear your browser cache
Use a different browser
Restart your device
Clear your DNS cache
