In most cases, the username or email address you use to sign in to your Proton Account can’t be changed. However, if you signed up for Proton VPN using an external (non-Proton) email address, you can change your login email address one time.
In this guide, we show you how to change your login email address, and what your options are if you’ve already used your one-time change.
- In a browser, go to account.protonvpn.com and sign in to your Proton Account.
- Go to the Account tab.
- Click Change next to your username.
- Enter your new email address and confirm the change.

From now on, you’ll use your new email address to sign in to your Proton Account.
Note: You can only change your login email address once. After you’ve made this change, the Change option will no longer be available.
If the ‘Change’ option isn’t available
If you don’t see an Change option next to your username, you’ve most likely already changed your login email address. In this case, your login email address will stay the same, but you still have two options:
Update your recovery email address. Your recovery email address can be changed at any time and is used to help you regain access to your account if you forget your password.
Create a Proton Mail address. You can convert your external email account to a Proton Mail account by claiming a proton.me email address. During this process, you’ll choose a new Proton username and email address, which you can then use to sign in to your existing Proton Account.
