Spring and summer 2025 features

Online freedom should be the default for everyone. Proton VPN lets you stream, browse, work, and play online without surveillance or restrictions. To make Proton VPN a stronger privacy and anti-censorship product, we delivered on most of the targets featured in our last product roadmap (and more!)

This spring and summer, we’re expanding Proton VPN’s capabilities to make your life easier, more private, and more productive. From smarter ad-blocking to powerful upgrades on macOS, iOS, and Linux, these upcoming improvements reflect our commitment to building the VPN you want.

What’s coming this spring and summer

A better NetShield Ad-blocker

NetShield Ad-blocker blocks more than annoying ads — it improves your online security by blocking DNS calls to malware and tracker domains.

Starting this spring, it will make you even safer online by detecting and blocking phishing attacks(new window). This will help you avoid scams that attempt to steal your personal data or infect your device with malware by blocking DNS calls to known phishing domains.

Expanded streaming options

With a paid Proton VPN plan, you can already stream shows, movies, and sports events from almost 100 popular streaming services. This spring, we’re continuing to expand our streaming support to even more services worldwide, so you’ll be able to stream your favorite content wherever you are.

Powerful new features for our Apple apps (and Linux!)

All the features you expect from Proton VPN should be available everywhere you use our service. That’s why we’re focusing on improving our macOS, iOS, and Linux apps, bringing feature parity across all platforms. Coming this summer:

  • Split Tunneling (macOS and Linux): Choose which apps or websites route their connections through the VPN tunnel and which bypass it, preserving your access to local sites or those that don’t work with a VPN.
  • Port Forwarding (macOS): Improve the download speeds for peer-to-peer services and reduce lag while gaming.
  • Custom DNS (iOS and macOS): Choose your preferred third-party DNS service to access advanced DNS filtering features, such as parental controls and customized blocklists.
  • Guest Mode (iOS): Already a popular feature on Android, use Proton VPN on your iPhone or iPad without logging in to an account so you can connect in seconds.

Continuing improvements through spring and summer

As discussed above, our primary goal is to ensure you can access all our power features and have a consistent VPN experience on every device — especially on macOS, iOS, and Linux. We’re also working on:

  • Speed optimizations: Proton VPN is one of the fastest VPN services out there, but we’re going to tune our service even further to help the entire Proton VPN community get the full benefit of our high-speed network.
  • IPv6 support for Windows, macOS, and iOS: This will ensure full compatibility with the growing number of internet providers using IPv6-only connections.
  • Even better VPN connection profiles on Android and Windows: Building on recent improvements to VPN connection profiles, we’ll continue to make these even more customizable.
  • Light theme for Android: Not a fan of dark themes? You’ll soon be able to change Proton VPN to match the look and feel of the other apps on your Android phone or tablet (or Chromebook).
  • More improvements to our anti-censorship capabilities: Censorship is becoming more and more prevalent online, which is why we’re expanding methods to help you connect securely and access our service in countries with robust censorship capabilities.
  • More features for Android TV: We will work on adding some of the community’s most requested features, further improving the VPN experience on smart TVs.

What’s coming later this year

Looking further ahead, here are a few features we’re actively developing to improve your VPN experience. By the end of the year, we hope (but can’t promise) to bring you:

  • A command-line interface (CLI) on Linux. We’ll also be exploring GUI improvements.
  • Optimizations and customizations for gamers for a faster and more responsive gaming experience.
  • Yet more improvements to VPN connection profiles.
  • More new features to combat emerging privacy threats online.

We couldn’t do it without you

Every update on this roadmap began as a suggestion from the Proton VPN community. Whether it’s through Reddit(new window), UserVoice(new window), or X(new window), your ideas help shape the future of Proton VPN.

Thank you for supporting our work to make privacy and freedom available to everyone.
