Proton VPN is one of the largest VPN services in the world

In June 2024, we announced offering 5,000+ VPN servers in over 90 countries worldwide, already making us one of the largest and most popular VPN services in the world. We’re excited to say that just seven months later, we now offer 11,000+ VPN servers in over 110 countries and counting.

This dramatic milestone underscores Proton VPN’s place as not just one of the largest and most popular VPN services in the world, but also one of the fastest growing.

Why this matters to you

As Proton VPN expands, the usage from our growing community has put additional pressure on our server infrastructure. Adding more servers reduces the average server load, ensuring a better and more reliable service for everyone. Servers in more countries gives you greater choice, but also makes it easy to connect to a location near you. Again, closer servers results in faster connection speeds.

By investing heavily in our server network (not just the number of servers, but also by transitioning toward implementing ultra-fast 10 Gbps+ connections on all servers), we’re now one of the fastest VPN services in the world.

It’s worth noting that it’s not just our paid customers who benefit from this investment. We offer 2,300+ free servers in five countries (United States, Netherlands, Japan, Poland, and Romania), which is up from 266 in three countries a year ago. This is more than the total number of servers some VPN providers offer to their paid customers. We do this as part of Proton’s mission(new window) to make online privacy the default for everyone, supporting journalists, activists, and ordinary people around the world who live under authoritarian governments.

We also invest in our software

Of course, it’s not just our server infrastructure that we’ve been working on. To make streaming easier and more convenient, we’ve recently launched a new Apple TV app and now support almost 100 popular streaming services worldwide. To help combat censorship, we’ve added Stealth support to our Windows app and discrete app icons to our Android app.

To ensure all our features are available to everyone, we’ve launched a native ARM app for Windows, and added WireGuard® and IPv6 support to our Linux app. And following feedback from our community, we now offer a guest mode(new window) on Android that allows you to use our service without signing up for a Proton account.

Looking forward, we have exciting plans for 2025, including new widgets for iOS and Android, improved stealth and anti-censorship capabilities for iOS and iPadOS, advanced VPN profiles, and more.
