ProtonVPN wants to make online privacy available to everyone, but it can be difficult to provide VPN servers in some countries, due to a lack of reliable data centers or poor infrastructure.
Our Smart Routing feature allows us to provide IP addresses from one country while the corresponding bare metal VPN server is physically located in another country.
We follow all our standard security protocols for our Smart Routing VPN servers. That includes:
- Working with reliable, closely-vetted partners
- Using bare metal servers we can control down to the operating system level
- Applying full-disk encryption
- Wiping any server that experiences unscheduled down time
These servers will provide the same security, privacy, speed, and stability that you expect from ProtonVPN, with the additional benefit of allowing us to expand our VPN network to hard-to-cover countries.
How to connect to a VPN server using Smart Routing
Smart Routing is only available with a ProtonVPN Plus and Visionary plan.
In our VPN apps, each country whose servers use Smart Routing will be labeled with this globe icon:

You follow the same process to connect to a server that uses Smart Routing as you do with any of our other VPN servers. Simply choose the VPN server you wish to connect to and click or tap the Connect button.
