We only officially support Linux on Debian, Ubuntu, and Fedora running the GNOME desktop environment. Reports indicate that our Linux app works on Lubuntu, but support for this distro may be limited.

If you’d like to try Proton VPN out on Lubuntu, follow the instructions for how to install Proton VPN on Ubuntu with the following modifications:

  1. The Linux system tray icon (optional) step installs GNOME (all packages) on your system, so you should run the following instead:
sudo apt install libayatana-appindicator3-1 gir1.2-ayatanaappindicator3-0.1
  1. Our app relies on the nm-applet NetworkManager applet to work, but Lubuntu uses nm-tray by default. To fix this, go to Menu → PreferencesLXQt settings → LXQt Configuration Center.
Open the LXQt Configuration Center

Select Session Settings.

Select Session Settings

Go to the Autostart tab → Global Autostart and:

  • Check the Network box
  • Uncheck the nm-tray box

Click Close and restart your PC.
