Browse the Internet securely with a Mexican IP address

Posted on April 10th, 2020 by in Service Updates.

ProtonVPN has eight servers in Mexico.

We are happy to announce the installation of new VPN servers in Mexico. Mexico was the most popular country in our latest ProtonVPN servers poll.

The expansion into Mexico is part of our recent drive to add more servers to help our users deal with COVID-19 lockdowns. Mexico is the 48th country to join the ProtonVPN network, and our VPN servers there will reduce latency for our users in the Americas.

The eight new servers in Tuxtla Guiérrez, Chiapas, are available to users who have one of our paid plans. Each new server we install increases our capacity for new users and improves service for our current users.

MX#1-3 are available on our Basic plan.
MX#4-8 are available on our Plus and Visionary plans.

The benefits of servers in Mexico

Not only was Mexico in high demand from the Proton community, we are happy to add Mexican VPN servers because of the country’s position on Internet access. Even though it can be difficult for many Mexicans to connect in rural areas, Mexico was one of the first countries in the world to declare Internet access is a human right.

Now that these new servers have come online, Mexicans can protect their online browsing from online trackers with an extra layer of encryption. Connecting with a Mexican IP address also gives you access to more streaming content and better speeds for those who live there.

ProtonVPN Plus or Visionary users can activate our Secure Core feature. Secure Core allows you to add another layer of security because it routes your Internet traffic through a hardened server before sending it on to an exit server in your desired country. These hardened servers are controlled and owned by ProtonVPN, making it less likely that an attacker could access them. By routing your traffic through two servers, ProtonVPN offers you protection from even advanced network attacks.

Two months later and 8 added servers are down.
Contradictory enough you said that secure core feature is only available with plus & visionary, but server 1 is the marked with basic and as secure core.

Thank you for this! As a Mexican National, and long time ProtonMail/VPN subscriber, It makes me very proud to read such positive coverage about my country. However, not all is sweet and good news. Your service comes to Mexico as a welcome tool to fight against our own government’s unlawful and covert surveillance, particularly of the press, NGOs and individuals or members of government opposition parties. Specifically. Government at all levels (federal, state and municipal have been shown to engage in the acquisition (with public funds) of spyware and surveillance technology by such actors as the israeli NGO group, makers of the PEGASUS suite of implants and surveillance tools for mobile, and they have also been found to target specific and prominent news anchors, and reporters in order to monitor their communications. Logic dictates that on the dark side (organized crime and cartels) similar but mostly unreported efforts have taken place in order to gain insight on law enforcement and citizen activists who dare protest cartel violence. Although the threat model for journalists, activists and NGOs is wide and intense, few trustworthy resources are available to parties seeking to mitigate the dire situation of communications privacy in Mexico. I regard ProtonVPN as such a trustworthy resource. and a welcome part of the toolkit required to insure privacy most of the time, and more often than not, one’s very life, as is the case for journalists. activists, and even regular joes, like me. Gracias, ProtonVPN: mi casa es su casa. Bienvenidos.

We hope that you can use our service to protect your online browsing and keep your data private. ProtonVPN began after journalists and activists explained their need for online security, privacy, and freedom to the ProtonMail team. The situation you describe is why we take such care to maintain our security.

I think this is great. Are there any more plans to expand in Latin America? I think you should add a server in El Salvador, it is a small country, its capital is compact, and it is a dollarized economy. This could provide options for citizens in neighboring countries whose citizens face increased surveillance by borderline autocratic regimes.
Congrats Proton on expanding your mission to all citizens of the globe.

Thank you for this suggestion. We’re always looking to expand in response to user demand, so we will note this down. Our ultimate goal is to have ProtonVPN servers in every country, so we will be coming to El Salvador eventually.
