How to use Proton VPN on a Vega OS Fire TV Stick

Proton VPN offers a Vega OS app, allowing you to protect your privacy and stream content when traveling with a newer Fire Stick device.
In late 2025, Amazon started to roll out Vega OS, a Linux-based operating system for Amazon Fire TV Stick devices that replaces its Android-based Fire OS. You cannot install our Android app on a Vega OS Fire Stick.

How to use Proton VPN on your Vega OS Fire TV Stick
To get started, you’ll need a Proton Account. While you can install and run Proton VPN on your Vega TV device with our free plan, streaming support is only available on paid Proton VPN plans.
Install Proton VPN for Vega OS
Simply search for Proton VPN on your Fire TV Stick and follow the instructions on your TV screen.
Sign in to your account
Open the Proton VPN app on your TV and using your remote, select Sign in.
Sign in with QR code
1. Point your phone at the QR code and tap the link shown on your phone’s screen.
The sign-in page will open in your browser.
Sign in with verification code
If you can’t sign in using the QR code:
1. Open the Proton VPN app on your Vega OS Fire TV Stick.
2. Using your remote, select Trouble signing in?
3. You’ll see an 8-digit code on your screen.
2. Grab another device and go to https://protonvpn.com/firetv. Sign in to your Proton Account.
3. Enter the 8-digit code from your TV screen, then select Verify code.
Make sure you’re on protonvpn.com/firetv, not protonvpn.com(नई विंडो).
The first time (only) you connect to a Proton VPN server, you’ll see a permissions request screen. Select Allow.
Connect to the fastest country allowed by your plan
If you’re on our Free plan, select Quick connect to automatically connect to the fastest server for your location. Free servers are located in the Netherlands, Japan, Romania, Poland, Norway, Switzerland, Singapore, Mexico, Canada, and the United States.
If you’re on a paid plan, select Quick Connect to automatically connect to the fastest server for your location. We have servers located in over 140 countries worldwide.
Connect to a specific location
With a paid Proton VPN plan, you can connect to any of our servers located in over 140 countries worldwide. If you’re new to using a VPN to access video content, check out our streaming guide.
To connect to the fastest server in a country, select that country.
To connect to a particular city or state (where supported), long press on any country to see all available locations and select the one you want.
Disconnect
To disconnect from Proton VPN on your Vega OS Fire TV Stick:
- Open the Proton VPN app.
- Select Disconnect.
Am I running Vega OS or Fire OS?
Amazon doesn’t label which OS a Fire Stick uses on the box, its product page, or on any of its marketing material.
- Currently, only Fire TV Sticks run Vega OS. Amazon is simultaneously still developing Fire OS 16 (based on Android 16) for its smart TV line.
- Only Fire TV sticks purchased after October 2025 may be running Vega OS. But Amazon continued to also release Fire Stick models running Fire OS after this date.

On the device itself
- Go to Settings → My Fire TV → About
- You’ll see Fire OS xxx or Vega OS xxx listed
By its name
If you’re thinking of buying a device, AFTVnews(नई विंडो) suggests Amazon’s naming convention is the giveaway:
- Model names with Select in them: Vega OS
- Model names with HD that also support Wi-Fi 6: Vega OS
Every other Fire Stick currently sold (e.g. Fire TV Stick 4K, 4K Plus, and the regular HD stick without Wi-Fi 6) still runs Fire OS.
Note that Vega OS will ship with new devices only. Amazon has no plans to replace Fire OS with Vega OS on existing devices that currently run Fire OS.
Troubleshooting
Sign-in issues
If you’ve signed into your Proton Account and you can’t see anywhere to enter your 8-digit code, make sure you’re on protonvpn.com/firetv(नई विंडो), not protonvpn.com(नई विंडो).
