ProtonVPN is launching a truly free VPN app for macOS today, in order to provide accessible Internet privacy to all who need it.

Building on the success of its apps for Windows and Android, ProtonVPN’s macOS app delivers privacy and security with an easy-to-use interface. ProtonVPN is developed by the same team that built ProtonMail, the world’s largest encrypted email service. Since launching in 2017, ProtonVPN has grown rapidly and now provides secure Internet for half a million people worldwide.

While there is no shortage of VPN applications available today, there is a distinct lack of trust and credibility within the industry. Many VPN apps that claim to be free are actually far from it, as users are actually “paying” with their browsing data, which is then sold to advertisers. Furthermore, many paid VPNs have also been shown to contain malware or have security vulnerabilities.

ProtonVPN not only solves common security problems of other VPN apps with technologies such as Secure Core or Tor integration, it also offers a truly free service with no ads, no malware, and no monetization of user data. The free plan includes unlimited bandwidth and servers in three continents. Users can optionally upgrade to access more servers and extra features. These paid users plus donations fund the free service.

The new macOS VPN app is the company’s latest push to democratize privacy and security for Internet users everywhere.

“Our mission is to make the world a safer place by ensuring that citizens around the world have access to an Internet free of spying and censorship,” said Dr. Andy Yen, CEO of ProtonMail. “Releasing a free VPN service for macOS is another important step in that direction.”

Yen founded ProtonMail in 2013 with a team of scientists who met at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research and the lab where the World Wide Web was created. Since then, ProtonMail and ProtonVPN have become the favored tools for journalists, activists, businesses and millions of citizens worldwide. ProtonVPN has also recently been used to circumvent Internet blocks in both Turkey and Russia.

“More people are starting to wake up to the fact that privacy matters,” said Dr. Yen, “and it is important to make tools like VPN widely accessible, especially for the over 1.5 billion people around the world who live under Internet surveillance and censorship.”

You do not have to use our application if you don’t want to. There are two alternative ways to connect to VPN: you can use macOS in-built VPN client, you can check the tutorial here https://protonvpn.com/support/macos-ikev2-vpn-setup/ or you can use an OpenVPN client called Tunnelblick, you can check the tutorial here https://protonvpn.com/support/mac-vpn-setup/. However, keep in mind that both methods do not offer additional features like Killswitch or automatically updated server list.
