Discontinuing support for OpenVPN on Android
The OpenVPN protocol will soon no longer be available on Proton VPN for Android. But you’ll still be able to configure it manually using third-party apps.
Why are we discontinuing support for OpenVPN?
OpenVPN was first released back in 2001. And while it’s still as robust and secure as ever, its age is starting to show.
Put simply, it’s old, slow, and bloated compared to modern protocols like WireGuard® and our own Stealth protocol.

These modern protocols are faster, more powerful, and equally secure. We also found that removing OpenVPN makes the app faster, improves battery life, and reduces its size by around 40%.
With this in mind, there’s little reason to keep offering OpenVPN. We’ve already removed it from our Apple apps, and less than 1% of you use it on Android.
You can still manually configure OpenVPN
Even though you won’t be able to select OpenVPN in the Android app settings, our servers still support OpenVPN connections.
If you need OpenVPN for your Android device, you can manually configure third-party apps such as OpenVPN for Android and OpenVPN Connect.
