The OpenVPN protocol is no longer be available on Proton VPN for Android and Proton VPN for Android. But you’ll still be able to configure it manually using third-party apps.

Why are we discontinuing support for OpenVPN?

OpenVPN was first released back in 2001. And while it’s still as robust and secure as ever, its age is starting to show.

Put simply, it’s old, slow, and bloated compared to modern protocols like WireGuard® and our own Stealth protocol.

Learn more about OpenVPN vs. WireGuard

These modern protocols are faster, more powerful, and equally secure. We also found that removing OpenVPN reduces the app’s size by around 36%, reducing the storage space it uses and speeding up downloads.

With this in mind, there’s little reason to keep offering OpenVPN. We’ve already removed it from our Apple apps, and less than 1% of you use it on Android.

You can still manually configure OpenVPN

Even though you won’t be able to select OpenVPN in the Android app settings, our servers still support OpenVPN connections.

If you need OpenVPN for your Android device, you can manually configure third-party apps such as OpenVPN for Android and OpenVPN Connect.
