A VPN can’t protect you when it’s off. And the easier it is to use, the more likely you’ll keep it on. That idea shaped everything we built this spring and summer, and it’s still driving what we’ll do next.
Here’s a quick look back at what we delivered, followed by what we’re working on in the months ahead.
Spring and summer recap
In April, we shared our spring and summer roadmap. Since then, we’ve delivered most of what we promised, and then some. Much of that work happened under the hood. We rebuilt how your Proton VPN apps connect, from the ground up, so they’re more reliable today, harder to block, and ready for the features coming next.
Here’s what’s new for you:
For everyone
- We built a new VPN protocol codebase: With Proton protocols, most of our apps (not macOS yet) can now connect faster are harder to block. Our new WireGuard®-based implementation also provides the foundation for several features in this roadmap.
- The world got bigger: We’re now in 149 countries with 196 locations, including new smart routing servers for China. This means you can access your local online services, wherever your travels take you.
- Lots more Linux goodness: Our Linux GUI app now supports Stealth (thanks to Proton protocols), automatic localization (the app now uses the language configured in your OS), and an official Snap package(nytt vindu). More Linux love is coming.
- Your iPhone learned to work on its own: Our iOS and iPadOS app now lets you configure Shortcuts and Automations. Connect and disconnect with Siri, trigger connections based on location or time, and check connection status in advanced workflows.
- Connect your way on Windows: You can now exclude countries, cities, or states so they’re never picked when you connect to Fastest Country or Random.
- Independent auditors verified our logs promise again, for the fifth year running: Our latest no-logs audit means you can be sure we don’t log your online activity.
For organizations
If you manage Proton VPN for a team, here’s what appeared in the Proton VPN for Business(nytt vindu) admin console over the last few months:
Admin controls
- Always-on VPN for Windows (beta): Deploy device profiles that block internet connectivity until the device connects to a Proton VPN server.
- Configure our browser extension via MDM: Enforce settings like split tunneling across your business from a JSON profile deployed through your MDM.
- Group sync via SCIM: Groups set up in your identity provider now sync to Proton automatically, so you don’t have to recreate them.
- User activity tracking: Keep track of each user’s last app activity and connection details.
Security and compliance
- Web filtering: Block categories(nytt vindu) like adult content, games, or gambling on your dedicated servers. Available on request.
- Audit event export: Export audit events to external SIEM (security information and event management) platforms for centralized security monitoring and compliance reporting.
- Enhanced audit trails: You can now see team audit events for your business’ gateways, shared server policies (creation, updates, and deletion), and VPN access grants.
Reliability
- Gateways re-architecture: We re-engineered private gateways(nytt vindu) for greater consistency and fewer bugs.
- Server maintenance notifications: You’ll now see automated alerts when dedicated servers undergo maintenance.
- Improved admin console navigation: Making it easier for you to manage your team’s VPN use.

What’s coming this fall and winter
For everyone

This season is about making Proton VPN feel even more effortless to use on all your devices. We’re refreshing our apps, strengthening the kill switch, and making it simple to pause your VPN without forgetting to turn it back on.
We’ll also push Protocols protocols out from beta (on most platforms — it has already left beta on Windows), and continue to improve and develop this exciting new codebase that will power new features and provide a firm foundation for meeting whatever challenges the future brings.
Enjoy a cleaner, more consistent app on every device
Last year, we overhauled our Windows and Android apps. Now we’re bringing the same intuitive, consistent, and native experience to macOS, iOS and iPadOS (beyond the home screen, which we’ve already updated), and Linux. Our Android TV app will also connect faster and make the features you actually use even easier to reach.
A smarter kill switch
If your VPN connection drops, the kill switch ensures your real IP address isn’t exposed. We’re improving it on Linux, macOS, iOS, and iPadOS. And thanks to Proton protocols, we’re also bringing advanced kill switch to macOS. This blocks internet access whenever you’re not connected to the VPN, so no internet traffic leaves your device unprotected.
Pause your VPN without forgetting to turn it back on
Some sites and apps won’t work while your VPN is on, so you may sometimes need to briefly turn it off. The tricky part is remembering to turn it back on. With Pause and Resume, you’ll choose how long to pause, and Proton VPN will reconnect automatically when that time is up. This feature will come to Windows and Android first, with other platforms to follow.
Use Proton VPN hassle-free
Guest mode lets you use Proton VPN without the added steps signing up for a Proton Account. Download the app and select Continue as Guest to connect to our free servers with just one click or tap. Already available on our mobile apps, we’ll bring this to our desktop apps, starting with Windows.
Install Proton VPN your way on Linux
Proton VPN will be officially available for Mint, Arch Linux, and as a Flatpak, a universal package format that works across most Linux distributions. So whichever Linux distribution you prefer, you’ll be able to install Proton VPN from an official, Proton-maintained source and get updates and security fixes directly from us.
For organizations

We’re continuing to build out Proton VPN for teams(nytt vindu) and businesses:
- Monitor your team more effectively: Get alerts and a real-time view of your organization’s network and events in the Proton VPN for Business admin dashboard. We promised this in our last roadmap, but its coming soon.
- Connect your sites securely: Link your offices, data centers, or cloud networks through Proton VPN, so your teams and systems can reach each other directly and without exposing your sensitive traffic to the open internet.
- Give people only the access they need: Ensure team members can see and change only the settings and data relevant to their job with finer-grained control over who can manage what in your business or organization.
- Understand how your team uses Proton VPN: New reporting capabilities give you clearer insight into VPN usage across your organization.
- Control VPN use across your fleet: Always-on VPN(nytt vindu) is coming to macOS, and you’ll be able to set split tunneling rules and apply them to every device.
- Greater availability: We’ll expand our reach through resellers, and offer early support for managed service providers who deploy Proton VPN for their clients.
