Everyone can use Proton VPN’s Chrome and Firefox extensions for free

We’re excited to announce that Proton VPN’s browser extensions for Chrome (and Chromium-based browsers) and Firefox will now be available to everyone with a Proton Free plan. These extensions have been one of the most popular requests from the Proton community. Now that they’re available for free, they make it easier for people worldwide to protect their privacy and bypass censorship online.

Note: Proton VPN is also available for Chromium-based browsers, such as Brave, Microsoft Edge, Chromium, Opera, and Vivaldi.

Note: Proton VPN is also available for Firefox-based browsers, such as LibreWolf, and Waterfox.

How to use the Proton VPN browser extension

  1. Download the Proton VPN browser extension from the Chrome Web Store(ventana nueva) or Firefox Browser Add-ons(ventana nueva).
  2. Sign in using your Proton VPN account username and password.
  3. Click the Quick Connect button or choose a country or individual server.

Defeating censorship is more important than ever

This has been a momentous year for democracy — and for internet censorship. Before 2024 is over, roughly 50% of the global population will have voted in a national election, including many countries with a history of censoring the internet or other undemocratic practices.

At Proton VPN, we believe everyone has the right to privacy and self-determination. We’ve committed to making VPN servers available for free during the run-up to elections in 21 countries where people have been subjected to online misinformation and censorship in the past. We’ve also released our custom-built Stealth VPN protocol on our Windows app and discreet app icons for Android, making it easier for people living under authoritarian governments to use our services. These resources have proven necessary as we have seen spikes in Proton VPN downloads during elections in Senegal(ventana nueva), Mozambique(ventana nueva), and Venezuela(ventana nueva)

We’re augmenting our efforts by making the Proton VPN browser extensions available for everyone for free (previously they had only been available with a paid plan). They’re the perfect tool as they simplify online protection and let us reach an even wider audience.

Simplifying the VPN experience

The Proton VPN browser extensions let you connect to a VPN server and encrypt your internet connection with a single click without requiring you to install the app on your device, making it even easier for people to ensure they can access the uncensored internet. And because you can download our browser extensions directly from our website or the Chrome and Firefox web stores, we can reach people in countries where governments have blocked VPNs from the Google Play Store and Apple App Store.

You can use the Proton VPN browser extensions to connect your browser to our VPN servers while the other applications on your device operate normally using your local ISP. If you have a Proton VPN paid plan, you can run our browser extension in as many different browsers as you like and connect each browser to a different server with up to 10 simultaneous VPN connections.

The Proton community supports online freedom

Proton VPN plays a vital role in allowing everyone to access free and open internet. We provide the Proton Free plan precisely because everyone has the right to accurate information and privacy, but this would not be possible without the support of the Proton community.

Anyone who has chosen a paid Proton plan has enabled our team to develop novel anti-censorship features and make our apps, extensions, and servers available for free. This has made Proton VPN one of the most popular VPN services in the world, especially in countries where the internet is closely monitored or heavily censored.

Thank you for your support.
