Today we’re announcing new VPN servers in Turkey(nouvelle fenêtre), the 45th country on our list, and one where secure, private access to the Internet is in demand. Our eight new servers in Istanbul will let Proton VPN paid subscribers browse the Internet safely with a Turkish IP address.
We installed our eight new VPN servers in a data center in Istanbul. They are available to users on one of our paid plans(nouvelle fenêtre). Each new server we install increases our capacity for new users and improves service for our current users.
TR#1-3 are available on our Basic plan.
TR#4-8 are available on our Plus and Visionary plans.
Why servers in Turkey are useful
Proton VPN servers in Turkey provide faster connection speeds for users in Turkey and throughout the region. Our Istanbul servers also allow users traveling abroad to access web services as though they were inside Turkey. This comes in addition to the other benefits of using a VPN, including safer access to public WiFi and greater privacy from surveillance and ISP monitoring.
It’s important to note that, as their attempts to block Proton Mail(nouvelle fenêtre) have demonstrated, the Turkish authorities can be hostile to privacy tools. We have experience providing secure Internet access in high-risk countries(nouvelle fenêtre) and we take extra precautions to secure our VPN servers(nouvelle fenêtre). However, you should evaluate what threats you face online and consider using Secure Core(nouvelle fenêtre) before deciding to connect to our servers in Turkey to handle sensitive information (in addition to other online security precautions(nouvelle fenêtre)).
With Secure Core, your Internet traffic is routed through special, hardened servers in countries with strong privacy laws (Iceland, Sweden, and Switzerland) before it goes through the server in the high-risk country. For instance, if authorities are monitoring the VPN server in Turkey, they will only be able to trace the traffic back to the Secure Core server and not to your true IP address. Secure Core significantly reduces the risk of using a server in a high-risk jurisdiction.
Another way to access censored content is to access blocked websites over the Tor network. If you have one of our Plus or Visionary Plans, you can use Tor over VPN(nouvelle fenêtre), which lets you access the Tor network while using your standard browser. With Tor over VPN, you can send your Internet traffic through Tor nodes with a single click. This unlocks onion sites(nouvelle fenêtre) that can only be found through the Tor network, like Proton Mail’s Tor website(nouvelle fenêtre).
