Who owns Proton VPN?

Proton VPN is a service provided by Proton AG(new window), an employee-owned company based in Switzerland. Proton was founded in 2014 by a team of scientists who met at CERN(new window) (the European Center for Nuclear Research) and created Proton Mail, the world’s largest encrypted email service(new window).

Proton employees hold the vast majority of shares in the company. The remaining shares are held by the Fondation Genevoise pour l’Innovation Technologique (FONGIT)(new window), a non-profit foundation established for the public good, with a small number of shares held by Proton users. Proton’s global headquarters and legal domicile is in Geneva, Switzerland.
