Proton VPN supports data journalists through the European Journalism Centre

Starting this World Press Freedom Day, Proton VPN will be offering discounts to data journalists through the European Journalism Centre’s new website, DataJournalism.com.

This April, the European Journalism Centre launched DataJournalism.com(new window) to help train new data journalists. EJC Director Adam Thomas wrote in a blog post(new window) that the site is meant to be “a new space for journalists to learn and improve data skills, explore the latest challenges in the field and discuss new approaches with their peers.”

Data journalists sift through datasets to identify and illuminate the hidden trends shaping our world. Equal parts data analyst and traditional journalist, data journalists use data to discover new insights or clarify complex stories with visualizations in ways that can help sharpen or refocus the public dialogue. This service is an invaluable contribution to the freedom of information and democracy, values that are also at heart of the mission of Proton VPN.

DataJournalism.com is free to anyone who signs up and offers its members numerous resources, including handbooks(new window) full of case studies, video classes on data visualization(new window), and a user forum(new window) where journalists can trade ideas and ask questions.

Membership also entitles you to discounts from tech partners — including Proton Mail and Proton VPN! Journalists who sign up for DataJournalism.com can create a new Proton VPN account or upgrade their existing free account, and receive 25% off our Plus plan.

To get the discount, you can register a free account here: https://datajournalism.com/register(new window). Then check your “goodie bag” for a discount code.

Note that this discount is only available to new members or users of our free plan. Users that have already made a payment with their existing account do not qualify.

How Proton VPN supports journalists

Proton VPN can trace its development back to discussions that the Proton Mail team had with journalists that underlined their need for a VPN service they could trust. From our launch in 2017(new window), we have offered a free VPN service(new window) that has no privacy-invading ads, no malware, no bandwidth limits, and no logs to help dissidents, whistleblowers, and journalists securely and privately access the Internet. Since then we have produced educational resources that explain which governments are threatening the freedom of speech(new window) and how journalists can secure their devices(new window).

We recently held a charity auction to support the Berlin Scholarship Program(new window), a four-month workshop run by Reporters Without Borders Berlin that trains reporters in conflict zones on digital security, and Charter’97(new window), the largest independent news organization in Belarus, whose editor was forced to flee into exile for her safety. We view our support of DataJournalism.com as a continuation of our commitment to the free press and quality journalism.

Best Regards,
The Proton VPN Team
