Proton VPN is pleased to announce the global launch of its Android mobile application today. The Proton VPN Android app is a free Virtual Private Network (VPN) service for Android that allows users to browse the web without being tracked, bypass online censorship blocks, and also increases security by passing all internet traffic through a strongly encrypted tunnel.
Proton VPN is developed by the same team of scientists who met at CERN and created ProtonMail(nueva ventana), the world’s largest encrypted email service with millions of users worldwide that has become the favored email service of many activists, journalists, and individuals concerned about online rights and privacy.
“It is important to make the tools that protect online privacy and freedom widely accessible,” says Proton Mail Co-Founder Dr. Andy Yen, “for this reason, we are releasing Proton VPN on Android for free, without bandwidth limits or other data caps.”
In the past year, there have been more and more threats against a free Internet, included the repeal of Obama-era rules(nueva ventana) designed to protect consumer internet browsing history, the recent US FCC vote to , not to mention the over 1.5 billion people around the world who live with censored Internet. Proton VPN is designed to give consumers around the world an easily accessible tool for defending privacy, security, and freedom online.
While Android VPNs have existed for many years, Proton VPN draws upon the Company’s extensive security experience and introduces several important security innovations. Proton VPN features a Secure Core architecture(nueva ventana) which routes traffic through multiple encrypted tunnels in multiple countries to better defend against network based attacks, and also features seamless integration with the Tor anonymity network.
The most important differentiator however, is that unlike other “free” VPNs, the Proton VPN does not show ads, install malware, or sell user data in order to monetize. Recent studies have shown that 38% of Android VPN apps actually contain malware(nueva ventana), and several prominent free VPN services have recently been caught secretly selling user data(nueva ventana). The free service is instead funded by paid subscribers and subsidized by Proton Mail.
“Strong encryption and privacy are a social and economic necessity. Not only does this technology protect activists and dissidents, it is also key to protecting democracy in the digital age,” says Yen, “There are 2 billion Android users worldwide, and being able to provide each and every one of them access to secure Internet is a major milestone in our mission to make online privacy a reality again for all Internet users.”
